Elastomer-based touch sensor: Visualization of tactile pressure distribution

    Get PDF
© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019. This paper presents an elastomer-based tactile sensor that can sense the tactile information in the form of pressure distribution. Our proposed sensor uses a piece of coated elastomer with thin conical pins underneath as the touch medium. The elastomer consists of 91 pins arranged in a honeycomb pattern, each pin can be regarded as a tactile sensing element. They are spaced at 1.5 mm in x and y direction. Each tactile element transfers the applied pressure value into a circular image pattern which can be captured by a camera placed at the end of the sensor structure. The applied pressure over the sensing array can be computed by processing the area of each sensing element. MATLAB is used to process the received images relating the applied pressure to the activated pixels in each circular pattern of the tactile element, and further visualizing the pressure distribution on a reconstructed surface of the sensor. This paper presents the development principle and fabrication process of the proposed sensor. The experimental results have proven the viability of the sensing concept; the prototype sensor can effectively detect single-point touch caused by objects with different dimensions and multi-point touch interactions with a spacing of more than 2.5 mm

Long-term spectropolarimetric monitoring of the cool supergiant Betelgeuse

We report on a long-term monitoring of the cool supergiant Betelgeuse, using the NARVAL and ESPaDOnS high-resolution spectropolarimeters, respectively installed at Telescope Bernard Lyot (Pic du Midi Observatory, France) and at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (Mauna Kea Observatory, Hawaii). The data set, constituted of circularly polarized (Stokes V) and intensity (Stokes I) spectra, was collected between 2010 and 2012. We investigate here the temporal evolution of magnetic field, convection and temperature at photospheric level, using simultaneous measurements of the longitudinal magnetic field component, the core emission of the Ca II infrared triplet, the line-depth ratio of selected photospheric lines and the radial velocity of the star.Comment: Proceedings of the Betelgeuse Workshop, Paris, 26-29 Nov 201

The role of Zn in the sustainable one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from carbon dioxide, methanol and propylene oxide

Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) can be applied as a greener alternative to more hazardous materials, e.g. phosgene or dimethyl sulfate. Herein, one-pot synthesis of DMC from propylene oxide, methanol and CO2 using alkali halide catalysts under mild conditions was studied. Addition of Zn powder to the K2CO3-NaBr-ZnO catalyst system was seen to increase DMC selectivity from 19.8% (TOF = 39.0 h-1) to 40.2% (TOF = 78.1 h-1) at 20 bar and 160 °C for 5 h. Catalyst characterisation showed that Zn powder increases the stability of the catalyst, preventing the active ingredients on the catalyst surface from leaching. An increase in propylene oxide conversion to DMC is attributed to the increase of Zn2+ ions in the reaction solution. Elevated pressure was not found to be a necessary reaction condition for transesterification. This study shows that increased selectivity to DMC can be achieved at mild conditions with the addition of Zn powder

Lithium and magnetic fields in giants. HD 232862 : a magnetic and lithium-rich giant star

We report the detection of an unusually high lithium content in HD 232862, a field giant classified as a G8II star, and hosting a magnetic field. With the spectropolarimeters ESPaDOnS at CFHT and NARVAL at TBL, we have collected high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra of three giants : HD 232862, KU Peg and HD 21018. From spectral synthesis we have inferred stellar parameters and measured lithium abundances that we have compared to predictions from evolutionary models. We have also analysed Stokes V signatures, looking for a magnetic field on these giants. HD 232862, presents a very high abundance of lithium (ALi = 2.45 +/- 0.25 dex), far in excess of the theoretically value expected at this spectral type and for this luminosity class (i.e, G8II). The evolutionary stage of HD 232862 has been precised, and it suggests a mass in the lower part of the [1.0 Msun ; 3.5 Msun ] mass interval, likely 1.5 to 2.0 solar mass, at the bottom of the Red Giant Branch. Besides, a time variable Stokes V signature has been detected in the data of HD 232862 and KU Peg, pointing to the presence of a magnetic field at the surface of these two rapidly rotating active stars.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures ; accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic

Autonomous Object Handover Using Wrist Tactile Information

Grasping in an uncertain environment is a topic of great interest in robotics. In this paper we focus on the challenge of object handover capable of coping with a wide range of different and unspecified objects. Handover is the action of object passing an object from one agent to another. In this work handover is performed from human to robot. We present a robust method that relies only on the force information from the wrist and does not use any vision and tactile information from the fingers. By analyzing readings from a wrist force sensor, models of tactile response for receiving and releasing an object were identified and tested during validation experiments

Fingertip Proximity Sensor with Realtime Visual-based Calibration

Proximity and distance estimation sensors are broadly used in robotic hands to enhance the quality of grasping during grasp planning, grasp correction and in-hand manipulation. This paper presents a fiber optical proximity sensor that is integrated with a tactile sensing fingertip of a robotic hand of a mobile robot. The distance estimation of proximity sensors are typically influenced by the reflective properties of an object, such as color or surface roughness. With the approach proposed in this paper, the accuracy of the proximity sensor is enhanced using the information collected by the vision system of the robot. A camera is employed to obtain RGB values of the object to be grasped. Further on, the data obtained from the camera is used to obtain the correct calibration for the proximity sensor. Based on the experimental evidence, it is shown that our approach can be effectively used to reduce the distance estimation error
